After two long absent years the Royal Welsh went ahead with record temperatures forecast reflecting the hot competition in the sheep rings. The heatwave did affect numbers of sheep forward with Society members bringing reduced numbers of stock in anticipation of the high temperatures. Fortunately the large fans installled in the sheep sheds did provide plenty of relief from the temperatures outside.
Seventeen exhibitors in total were forward for the Judge of the Kerry Hill classes Mr Sion Jones, Frongoy, Ceredigion of the Fronarth Flock. After several hours of judging Sion Jones picked out his Champion, a Shearling Ewe, exhibited by Ellie Amphlett née Owens, Woodhouse Farm flock. This was the debut show appearance for the shearling ewe bred by Mrs J Williams, Sallens flock, who is sired by the Owen’s successful Clayfield tup and was purchased by Ellie last year.

Overall Reserve Champion went to a Ewe two shear and over, exhibited by Dumfries based Angie and Stuart Burgess, Top Spot flock. The ewe was purchased as a lamb at the Society’s Carlisle sale from breeders by R & J Price, Pentrenant flock.

Following the judging of all the breed classes the Kerrys shone through in Wednesday and Thursday’s various Interbreed sections, being shortlisted everytime. But it was Ellie Amphlett’s shearling ewe who was triumphant in the Overall Interbreed competition being awarded RWAS Champion in the Native Upland Championship.

Well done and thank you to all the exhibitors for taking extra care of their stock and to the spectators for enduring the heat and showing their support around the ring.
