Flurrys of snow certainly brought a festive feeling to the second Christmas Cracker sale at Harrison and Hetherington’s Borderway Mart, with many buyers braving the cold to purchase future genetics for their flocks.
A larger entry, on the year, of ewes and lambs saw a leading price of 1800gns for a shearing ewe from J & P Owens, Woodhouse Flock. The shearling ewe in lamb to Dalwayne Zeus was purchased by Belgium breeder Luc Verheyden, who also purchased the next highest price shearling ewe in- lamb to Dalwyne Avivii for 1250gns, also from the Woodhouse pen. The next best from the Woodhouse pen sold for 1200gns to P Thompson for his County Durham based Wolsingham flock. Other pen leading prices for shearling ewes were 900gns for a shearling in-lamb to Whitcastles Angus from J Graham’s Birsca flock, 850gns for a shearling ewe in-lamb to a Calcot ram from A Smith’s Wester flock and 800gns for a shearling ewe in-lamb to Woodhouse 2 Bonkers from A Burgess’s Top Spot flock.
Older ewes met a more selective trade with a top price of 500gns for a ewe in-lamb to Coull Canna for S MacGill’s Coull flock, selling to T Tennant for his East View flock.
Ewe lambs met with strong trade, topping at 1400gns for a March born lamb from S A Jones’s Fronarth flock, this lamb caught the eye of K Mcintosh and joins her Glenhaugh flock in Roxburghshire. Two more lambs made 1000gns, the first from J Graham’s Birsca flock, selling to S Macgill and A Jones, Coull Flock, the second at 1000gns was from A Burgess’s Top Spot flock selling to J Shave’s Wiltshire based Ambelle flock.
Thank you to all our vendors and purchasers, also thank you to Linda Bull for baking us homemade cakes and sausage rolls, they were certainly appreciated!
