Powerful Pengwern Ewe Picks Up Top Prize at Royal Welsh Show
With a strong line-up forward, the Kerry Hill classes at this year’s Royal Welsh Show were judged by Miss Hannah Owens of the Woodhouse Flock, who described it as ‘a real honour’ to take centre ring. Miss Owens, who won the championship at last year’s show with a standout yearling ewe, praised the standard on show, saying: “The show of sheep has been a credit to the exhibitors.”
Taking the Overall Champion title was a powerful aged ewe from Geraint Roberts of the Pengwern Flock, North Wales. Bred from a Leinthall ram and a homebred Pengwern ewe, the March 2022-born female stood out on the day to take both Female and Overall honours.
Judge Hannah Owens said: “She’s a very feminine ewe with power and good carriage, good width, and was very showy on the day.”
Standing Reserve was a March-born ewe lamb from Sion Jones’ Fronarth Flock, Ceredigion. Sired by the Woodhouse 2 Champion and out of a Fronarth ewe, the stylish lamb was tapped out as Reserve Female and Reserve Overall Champion.
“She’s a lovely ewe lamb with width, very stylish and correct,” added the judge.
The Male Championship went to a smart ram lamb from the Old School Kerry Hills team, who also secured first place in the shearling ewe class. William Evans took Reserve Male with a ram lamb that stood second in a strong class.
In the group competitions, Geraint Roberts’ trio took top spot in the Group of Three, ahead of strong entries from Gunhild Myrset-Davies and Emma Rhys-Roberts.
