Kerry Hill tup lamb breed record smashed at Carlisle as two lots hit 3,800gns

A new breed record for a Kerry Hill tup lamb was set at Carlisle, where two lots shared the 3,800gns top price at the Kerry Hill Flock Book Society’s final autumn sale of the year.

 

The Society’s seventh official Carlisle Show and Sale was held at Borderway Mart on the same day as the market’s wider Rare and Minority Breeds fixture. Buyers competed strongly for the leading Kerry Hills, although trade proved more selective further down the catalogue.

 

First to reach 3,800gns was Goggleflox Friend-in-me from Dani Blair, of the Thrimby flock, Thrimby, Cumbria.

 

The shearling ram, by Dalwyne Zeus and out of a Whitcastles ewe, was knocked down to J. and P. Owens, of the Woodhouse 2 flock, Shobdon, Herefordshire.

 

Matching the 3,800gns top price was first-prize tup lamb Top Spot Gigolo from A.M. Burgess, of the Top Spot flock, New Abbey, Dumfries.

 

Its sale established a new breed record for a Kerry Hill tup lamb.

 

Gigolo is by Pentrenant Choir Boy and out of a Pentrenant ewe. It sold to Sophie McCarlie, of the Hassockrigg flock, Harthill, North Lanarkshire.

 

Mrs Burgess was also behind the next leading price, selling Top Spot Fernando for 2,100gns.

 

The shearling ram had earlier stood second in its class before being tapped out Reserve Male Champion under pre-sale judge Kate Esler, of the Kingswater flock, North Somerset.

 

By Pentrenant Choir Boy and out of Top Spot Cowgirl, Fernando sold to Stuart Lane, of the Penygelly flock, Newtown, Powys.

 

Two lots then sold at 1,900gns, including Female and Reserve Overall Champion Come-Bye Ester from Domino Phillips, Endmoor, Cumbria.

 

The shearling ewe, which had stood first in its class, is by Woodhouse 2 Dick Turpin and out of a Riggshield ewe. It sold to Greig Bain, Cairntop Kerry Hill flock, Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire.

 

Also making 1,900gns was Dani Blair’s second-prize tup lamb, lot 204, which sold to K.M. and K.M. Mawson, Seascale, Cumbria.

 

Following at 1,800gns was a shearling ram from T.R. Evans, of the Calcot flock, Llandrinio, Powys.

 

By Woodhouse 2 Distinction and out of a home-bred Calcot ewe, it sold to Cadi Llwyd Ellis, Cerrigydrudion, Conwy.

 

Female trade also saw two Top Spot ewe lambs make 1,100gns.

 

Top Spot Go Go Girl, which had stood first in the ewe lamb class before taking the Reserve Female Championship, is by Downwood Dewi and out of Top Spot Chalky. It sold to Sharon Kinloch, Cardross, Dunbartonshire.

 

The pre-sale Overall and Male Championship went to S.A. Hamer, of the Dorddu flock, Llanidloes, Powys, with the shearling ram Dorddu Freddie.

 

Averages: 11 shearling ewes, £579.41; 24 ewe lambs, £390.69; 15 shearling rams, £969.50; 5 ram lambs, £1,543.50.
