Downwood shares Top Spot as trade peaks at 2500gns in Carlisle

The final Autumn society sale for the Kerry Hills took place at Borderway Mart in Carlisle on Saturday, September 27, with almost 100 sheep entered. It was a strong show for the breed, backed up by a well-supported and buoyant sale, where quality sheep were met with lively bidding and good stock was duly rewarded.

Trade topping honours were shared on the day, but first through the ring was a shearling from J. Rowe and T. Webb’s Downwood flock. Selling for 2500gns, Downwood Earl is sired by Downwood Charlie and out of a homebred ewe. He was knocked down to D. Morrison, Girvan.

At the same price followed a ram lamb from the Burgess family. Top Spot Full Monty is by Pentrenant Choir Boy and out of Top Spot Black Magic, and sold to B. and C.G. Huxley, Penycae, also for 2500gns. The February-born ram lamb was bettered only by the following entry from the same home in his pre-sale show class, judged by Sophie McCarlie of the Hassockrigg flock.

Next best was Ms McCarlie’s champion for the day, Woodhouse 2 Emblem, from J. and P. Owens, at 2000gns. Sired by Woodhouse 2 Diamond and by a homebred ewe, the champion was knocked down to the judge herself, North Lanarkshire.

Matching 2000gns was the female and reserve overall champion, a February-born ewe lamb from A. Burgess’ Top Spot flock. Sired by Downwood Devi and out of Top Spot Carpe Diem, Top Spot Flossy sold to D. Beech, Derby, taking home the best priced female of the day.
